AMD is proud to announce that it is a Platinum Sponsor of the UT Solar Team and is donating two desktop computers with Cool'n'Quiet™ technology. AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology received special ENERGY STAR® recognition in 2005 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the advancement of energy-efficient computer technology.
The University of Texas' School of Architecture is one of 19 colleges competing in the 2005 Solar Decathlon (SolarD), which is a competition to design and build a home that demonstrates the advantages of a solar lifestyle. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design.
The UT SolarD team is currently designing their SNAP! (Super Nifty Action Packed!) House in Austin, Texas. The UT SolarD SNAP House is a sustainable, prefabricated, 100% solar-powered home that will be disassembled and transported to Washington, D.C. where it will be re-assembled for the competition on October 7.
One AMD-donated computer system will run Microsoft Windows® XP Professional with secondary software to monitor and control the environmental control systems in the house 24 hours a day. The second computer will run multimedia software to present demonstrations during the walkthrough of the SNAP! Home at the Solar Village in Washington, D.C.
Cool'n'Quiet technology-enabled desktops are the perfect fit for the UT SolarD team as this innovative technology reduces power consumption, heat and noise. AMD-based systems with Cool'n'Quiet technology enable the PC to draw on electrical power only when it is needed, thus saving electricity costs when the PC is idle or engaged in non-compute-intensive activities.
Daily updates throughout the Solar Decathlon competition will explore the students' strategy, highlight which solar houses are producing the most energy, recap onsite special events, and more.
